Well there isn’t much blooming in Monument Valley Park right now (although the cottonwoods and junipers actually ARE blooming! You can read more about these earliest bloomers here). But a few other members of the natural world are creating quite a stir. Over the past many weeks, visitors to the northern part of the park have been surprised and excited to see (and/or hear) these new residents:

On the day I photographed this pair of great horned owls, they were nicely exposed on the branches of a very tall white fir. Usually they roost where they are hidden during the day. However, the previous day had been super cold and overcast, so I suspect they were appreciating the warmth of the sun while they napped. They are probably nesting in this area this year – so keep an eye peeled for owlets soon!
